Students dance with delight as Gala returns at last

IT was an emotional evening at Lewes Town Hall this month when almost 100 young dancers finally got to perform to a live audience for the first time since 2019.

Pupils from across the year groups at Lewes Old Grammar School performed ballet, street dance, tap, Irish, contemporary and many other styles as they celebrated appearing in the school dance gala.

The showcase saw GCSE students perform routines that will decide their grades come the summer but also featured younger performers strutting their stuff to a packed house.

And in a touching reunion, two former students Scarlett Chamberlain and Lizzie Pearce came back to perform their routines after Covid denied them this opportunity back in 2020 when they would have shown off their GCSE dances.

LOGS dance teacher Jess Lloyd said: “Students from across the senior school, junior school and also the dance club Universal Dance took part, around 95 dancers in all, and there was a range of choreography and coursework along with some technical study and a number of senior and junior dance club routines. The junior school routines were real showstoppers. The galas are always a fantastic event and a real opportunity to celebrate the year 11s in particular, who work so hard. This year it was wonderful to see the children performing again after such a long time away from live events – and the show was really well received so we are delighted.”

Olivia Potter in Year 11 added: “I really enjoyed being able to perform live with my friends after so long. Being able to show people what we love and what we have been working so hard on was a really rewarding feeling.”
