Outdoor Learning

As adults, we all share concerns that children are leading more sedentary lifestyles and at the Junior School we are addressing this through our outdoor learning programme. For each age group we have planned a varied timetable so that our pupils can experience a diverse range of outdoor activities, helping them to develop as individuals whilst enhancing our academic curriculum.

Alongside forest school and bush craft activities, are orienteering, water sports and outdoor Maths, English, and Science days. Anyone who has taken children outside regularly has seen the enjoyment and sense of wonder and excitement that is generated when children actively engage with their environment. Our children take part in activities that stretch them and build their confidence and self-esteem. They learn to take managed risks, and to step outside their comfort zones. Team building is an important element of these sessions, encouraging children to work collaboratively alongside their peers.

In Science based sessions they learn about habitats, ecology and the importance of protecting the natural world. In Maths based sessions they will measure, count, estimate, sequence and calculate, collecting data that can be taken back to the classroom. English based sessions involve creative literacy, taking inspirations for stories from the natural world.
