THREE Year 9 pupils had the honour of seeing a film they made being screened at The Depot in Lewes during half term.
Edie Hitchmough, Amelia Johnson and Ella Ferguson took part in a six-week film making project at the cinema supported by youth environmental group Green United.
The girls made up one of a handful of groups of schoolchildren from across Lewes who were asked to create films focussing on a particular element of the world’s current environmental crisis – ahead of the COP26 in Glasgow this month.
Edie, Amelia and Ella decided to highlight the issues around the declining bee population in the UK and the wider effects of this.
Explained Edie: “We learnt so much during the sessions when we went down to Depot – both about the art of filmmaking and more about our chosen topic. We met experts in the areas we were working on and they explained more about the subject which helped us with our film.
“It was really cool, after all our work, to see our film up on screen when they showed them on October 31. It made me more determined to work to highlight environmental concerns and also made me think I’d like to make more films too.”
Green United supports children from primary and secondary schools across Lewes in their endeavours to tackle the climate emergency. It is supported by staff and students at Sussex University as well as local councillors, teachers and parents.
LOGS is also proud to be working hard to reduce its carbon footprint. This week the school takes delivery of its first 100% electric people carrier that the PE department will use to transport children and equipment to fixtures. A second vehicle is due to be delivered in the spring.
Estate manager Andy Hooper said: “Like everyone, we want to do our very best to reduce our footprint as much as we can as soon as we can and this is a step towards that.”
