Lewes Old Grammar School trampolinist Daniel Bradford has walked away with a silver medal after competing in an international competition in the Czech Republic which hosts Olympic hopefuls.
The Year 11 pupil joined 200 gymnasts from 14 delegations across the world this month to compete in the country’s prestigious 47th Prague International Trampoline Friendship Cup which was televised.
Representing his club Sky High Trampoline Gymnastics Academy in Uckfield, Daniel competed in the individual Junior Boys category in which 27 gymnasts, many of whom are members of their country’s national gymnastic squad, completed two trampoline routines in a bid for the opportunity to compete as one of eight finalists.
He made it through to the finals and then went on to take second place over all after completing a complex voluntary routine and achieving an excellent score of 50.050.
Mum Lynette Bradford said: “Daniel was invited, along with a member of the Welsh national team, to be a flag bearer representing the UK in the final day opening ceremony and it was a very emotional moment. He trains hard and puts in so much work and so his second place position was wonderful. It’s a great end to Daniel’s 2018/2019 competition season.
Daniel’s personal coach and mentor Gail Andrews said: “Sky High gymnasts proved without a doubt they have the ability to compete against world class opposition and are competitive in achieving medal positions. The competition itself was a wonderful event and has given all our gymnasts the international experience and confidence they need to develop further.”
Daniel is no stranger to success. In March, he took a title at the British Schools Gymnastics Association Trampoline Championships in Staffordshire and last December and this January he brought home gold for LOGS at the competition’s regional and zonal rounds respectively, qualifying for the national final.
In 2018 he held the title of U14 Boys Elite British Schools Trampoline Champion, in addition to bringing home a medal at the 2018 Trampoline, Tumbling & DMT English Championships.
Head of PE Murray Heywood said: “Everyone at the school is incredibly proud of what Daniel has achieved so far. He works hard, he is a polite student and is totally dedicated to his sport, which is paying off. He is an inspiration for the other students at Lewes Old Grammar School.”
