THREE students helped put together 602 hamper packages for families in need whilst volunteering for a local charity just before Christmas.
Rory, Matilda and Oscar Macleod, in years 10, seven and eight respectively, were helping the Greenway Foundation in Crawley which packages up and delivers food to families in need within Horsham, East Grinstead and Crawley.
The hampers contained everything a family would need to make Christmas dinner and some also had presents for children who had sent in their “wishes” – often the only present that child would receive.
Mum Lucy Macleod explained: “There was a shout out on Greenway’s Facebook page for someone to input the children’s wishes on a spreadsheet in their office as they were short staffed, which I was able to help with. The children’s involvement stemmed from there. It was a really intensive period, distributing the food and checking boxes and a very humbling experience to say the least. We will definitely be helping out again next year.”
Said Oscar: “When all the hampers were put out for us to start filling with Christmas Day provisions, I realized just how many people were struggling to put food on the table. The Greenway Foundation took away a worry for over 600 families at Christmas and I was grateful to be able to help in a small way.”
Matilda added: “It was quite hard work putting the hampers together but I didn’t mind at all, as it meant that all these families would have everything they needed for a Christmas Day feast.”
Headmaster Mr Blewitt added: “Rory, Matilda and Oscar set a great example of what Christmas is all about – thinking of others and helping out whenever you can. I’m proud of them.”
