Sports Journalist Visits LOGS

On Wednesday Year 12 were lucky to have Tom Coley come into talk to them about his profession which is sports journalism. He made it clear that both sport and journalism were some of his greatest passions and shared with us some of his great experiences. These being, interviewing Joe Cole and Gary Cahill and working at Bristol City where he covered articles on Antoine Semenyo and Alex Scott.

Despite these amazing experiences Tom said that his favourite part of his journalism career so far was covering Manchester City vs Crystal Palace in the FA Cup Final at Wembley in 2025 in which Palace won to claim their first ever major trophy. He attended Gloucester University in which he spoke very highly of and said he would strongly recommend this university to someone who was considering sports journalism as a profession, this was due to their unbelievable facilities in which students were encouraged to spend their free time using to do podcasts, conduct any interviews, or write match reports etc.
Whilst being at Gloucester university, Tom was given the amazing opportunities to work at both Bristol City and Preston North End in which he thoroughly enjoyed learning the ways in which a football club commences regarding media and journalism on and off a match day. Some advice that Tom provided for aspiring sports journalists is to start early, whether this is writing match reports on your favourite football team and sending it to your local paper, or starting your own podcast channel on the upcoming F1 season.

Anything that you can do to put yourself out there should be considered if you want to be known by newspapers or publishing teams at this early stage in your career. He also mentioned that his career has a lot of competition and is not an easy job to get into so putting yourself out there early on is the best way to achieve this incredible job.
