James Brandon takes first place at a county table tennis competition

Lewes Old Grammar School pupil James Brandon, 12, won the U13 East Sussex Individual Schools’ Championships at Sussex University in late January, and will now go forward as the East Sussex representative at the National Schools’ Individual Championships Final in April.

James is currently ranked 58th in the country for his age group, even though he only started playing competitively just over a year ago. After the event, James said “I am so proud of my achievement. It was an honour to play, and there was some strong opposition. I had a tough match in the final, and I look forward to playing him again soon.”

James also played in the U18 National Junior League recently. He won all ten of his matches, and with his team having won all but four in total, they hope to be promoted to division two next time.

He has also played at Horsham in the National Cadet League (U15), where his team remained in the top division, despite forfeiting a third of their matches just before Christmas when they were a player short! They’re still hoping to be in the running for fighting it out for third or fourth place overall on the forthcoming final day in March.
