YEAR 5 student Alfie Prior grew his hair during lockdown to give to a children’s cancer wig-making charity after his great aunt and grandmother battled the disease.
Like everyone else, Alfie was faced with months without being able to visit the hairdressers last March when the first lockdown hit the UK. But he decided to turn it into a positive by donating eight inches of his blonde hair – more than a year later – to the Little Princess Trust which makes wigs from real hair for child cancer sufferers. He also created a Just Giving page and raised £665 to send to Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity which had provided support for both his grandma and great aunt who fought off breast cancer in the past few years.
Mum Nicki explained: “Alfie was already aware of the effects of cancer because he knew my husband Dan’s mum Judy had suffered from it in the past and then my aunt also, during lockdown. He saw an advert on the TV showing a children’s cancer charity and he immediately wanted to help. I told him about the little Princess Trust and he was adamant that he wanted to grow his hair to give to them.”
She added: “He was also keen to help Macmillan. They were a great support for both Judy and my aunt, providing a quiet presence but always at the end of the phone. They supplied lots of background information and advice on all sorts of aspects like finance, claiming benefits, peripheral needs like transport for treatments and appointments and emotional stuff. They were also so helpful about things like hair loss, wigs and alternatives like hats and scarves. They gave us confidence and warnings about what dramatic and sudden changes we were to expect. They were also amazing at supporting the partners of cancer patients too.”
“Dan and I couldn’t be prouder of Alfie. It humbles us that a boy so young thought of others he could help during lockdown.”
LOGS Junior headmistress Carrie Whyte added: “During what was, for all children, a very confusing and difficult time, Alfie was busy thinking about how he could improve life in some way for other people. What a gentle little spirit he is.”
