Duke of Edinburgh
At LOGS the nationally recognised Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award is offered to all students at the end of Year 9. The students start with the Bronze award and complete it at the start of Year 11. The students can then take their Gold Award in the Sixth Form if they choose to continue with DofE.
The Duke of Edinburgh award was designed to encourage anyone aged 14 to 24 to take on a range of activities that develop skills such as leadership, perseverance, team work and communication. At LOGS we have continued to see the number of students completing their Bronze award grow and we have had several students receive their Gold awards from St James’ Palace in London, which truly is a great accomplishment.
The awards involve personalised programmes of activities in four sections: volunteering, physical, skills and expedition. There is also residential section required for the Gold Award.
Volunteering
Volunteering can involve helping a charity, working with people, animals or the environment, fundraising or coaching.
Physical
The physical section involves taking part in a sport. It could be a team sport, individual sport, water sport or more specialist sports such as Dance, Climbing or Mountain biking.
Skills
The skills section involves developing a skill such as art, performance, music, knowledge of science/technology or communication.
Expedition
The expedition takes place in a small team and involves camping overnight.
Residential
The residential section is only required for the Gold Award. The students need to spend five days and four nights taking part in a shared, worthwhile activity with people you’ve never met before. A DofE residential will boosts independence and confidence.
Why does LOGS offer DofE?
Finishing the Duke of Edinburgh award at any level is a real achievement.
Achieving Gold is particularly rewarding, it shows that the students have the skills, determination and mentality to really succeed. Receiving the Gold Award, at St James’ Palace in London, gives a sense of shared accomplishment with other young people from other schools and walks of life.
