Over the October half term, our Year 11 and 12 geography students travelled to Iceland to learn about the country’s diverse natural landscape and experience the spectacular beauty of the jagged coastlines, volcanoes and glaciers.
Staying in the land of both fire and ice, the 5-day trip took students on a spectacular tour around Iceland, staying in three different locations so that they could experience as much geography and wonder as possible.
Head of Geography at LOGS, Mrs Nagamootoo said: “The Iceland trip was spectacular in terms of geography, the beauty of the country and how environmentally pristine it is. I was overwhelmed with seeing all the tectonic processes and landforms I have been teaching for the last 20 years, in real life!”
With a full itinerary every day, students had the chance to visit LAVA, the Iceland Volcano and Earthquake centre and an array of natural wonders such as the Gullfoss waterfall, Reynisfjara volcanic beach and even take part in a glacier walk.
Putting on crampons and hiking over the largest glacier in Iceland was an experience never to be forgotten. Students were able to use their ice picks to remove some ice to eat, and even sip the iced water too.
When asking students about their highlight of the trip, many said it was seeing the lava burning hot in front of them when watching the Lava Show in the small town of Vik.
After a long day of exploring, another highlight of the trip had to be the Sky Lagoon, with geothermal heated pools reaching 38C along with a sauna, steam and cold plunge experience.
After learning about the incredible geographic features of Iceland in school, the trip was eagerly anticipated by both students and staff. Mrs Nagamootoo commented: “Iceland did not disappoint and the students and staff enjoyed every minute of the experience.”
