LOGS was very proud of its year 10 students during lockdown after they jointly ran 693km to raise money for MacMillan.
Ms Alpers, assistant head of Year 10, asked 21 Year 10 students if they were willing to run the MacMillan 10day5k challenge and each student reported in their daily kms. The children jumped to it and, along with six teachers also taking part, raised a whopping £859, getting up each morning to do their run or doing it after online lessons, between March 1 and 10.
They then logged their distances with Ms Alpers who had organized a MacMillan fundraising page which parents, family members, tutors, teachers and the wider school community could pledge money to.
Said Ms Alpers: “A close friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer at Christmas and I witnessed the devastation when her operation was cancelled due to Covid. That made it personal for me and motivated me to roll this out. It has been overwhelming to see the enthusiasm and dedication the pupils have shown towards the challenge. Some ran before tutor time in the morning, some after a long school day, some did it despite not really liking physical activity, others persevered despite their blisters! Some met up in pairs to run at a distance and that motivated them to do the long runs they achieved. “
She added: “It has really brought us together. When I started planning this, I did not know when we would return to school, and it was a way for our year group to work together, away from the screen, to achieve new goals while fundraising to support people living with cancer. Everyone’s lives are touched in some way by cancer – and I know many pupils had very personal reasons for taking part in the challenge so the pupils were really proud of their achievement.
“On top of that, we all know the mental health benefits of outdoor activity and many children commented on how taking part in the challenge gave them a reason to get out into the fresh air and to reach out to their friends to exercise together.”
