10-year-old Tobias turns sadness into fundraising in honour of his ‘Dadda’

When Year 5 pupil Tobias Packham was trying to cope with the loss of his grandfather Conrad after he passed away having suffered from cancer and heart complications in December, he came up with a wonderful way to deal with his grief.

Tobias decided to do something positive in his grandad’s name – he took on the challenge of running 20 kilometres to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

He ran 20 x 1km laps of Ditchling Common, accompanied by his friend Matthew for the first 10 and family members for the second 10 and to date has raised £473 for the charity through his Just Giving page.

Dad, Dean Packham, said: “I used to take Tobias to run laps of the Common in order to get some exercise during lockdown but the maximum he ever did at that time was 9-10 laps. He has also represented the school but as a sprinter and has not done this distance before. After all, 20k is a long way for a boy his age!”

He added: “We are extremely proud of him and this wonderful achievement – Tobias decided he wanted to honour his Grandad, or Dadda, as he was known, and showed great initiative by coming up with the idea, setting up the Justgiving page himself and then actually running 20k.”

Lewes Old Grammar Junior School headteacher Carrier Whyte said: “The fact that Tobias managed to channel his grief to support such a wonderful charity makes us incredibly proud of his determination and resilience. A lot of children did more exercise than they might otherwise have done during lockdown and it’s great to see this has inspired him to do something so worthwhile.”
